FAQ

Here are a few questions about me, plants, or anything else that you want me to answer! Feel free to email me more FAQ's!

HAVE YOU EVER KILLED A PLANT?

Of course, who hasn't? Obviously on accident, though. List of the dead include: Rosemary, Mint, Basil, Sweet Peas, Lemon Cucumber, Strawberries, Lettuce, Brussel Sprouts, Peperomia

(on the verge of dying), Ivy, etc. The list goes on!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLANT?

I love Fiddle Leaf Fig Trees! They're hard to take care of, but are so pretty! I also love to grow strawberries in the garden. They're pretty simple if you just give them plenty of sun and water frequently. And they taste great in smoothies!

WHICH PLANT DO YOU DETEST?

Why, thank you for asking! I can't stand cacti. I stepped on one once, and it was not fun. And they're not that pretty to me...sorry... BUT succulents are still awesome!

WHY DO YOU LOVE PLANTS SO MUCH?

There's something about the complexity of plants that just makes me in awe. The cells's ability to photosynthesize, their ability to adapt, their medicinal capabilities. I've honestly got to give all the credit to God! Every time I study the intricacies of a plant, I'm reminded of how genius God is and how much He cares for us to make His creation complex and enjoyable! He made every one of my cells, and I can be assured of how much He loves me no matter how many times I fail Him!

WHAT IS ROOT ROT?

From my understanding, it's an evil fungus that pops up in the roots after periods of over-watering. The symptoms include browning and wilting, which are also the symptoms for under-watering. Good luck distinguishing between the two. I'm still trying to do that too! If you know it's root rot, there's a small chance of recovery if you completely remove the plant from it's pot, shake of the dirt and pull off any infected, brown, black roots. Go to your local garden store for more advice on anti-fungal treatment.

ANY PLANTS YOU RECOMMEND FOR BEGINNER PROPAGATIONISTS?

Considering I'm a beginner propagationist, yes! IVY! Ivy. Ivy. Ivy. It's so simple! It's found everywhere where I live. Just trim off the ends where new growth is occurring (cut about 3-4 leaves in). Place in water (maybe even dip in cinnamon or root hormone), and put on a sunny windowsill. Change the water every couple of days to re-oxygenate it and wait a few weeks until one to two inch roots have formed. Plant in soil.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A TEACHER?

Such an important question with not enough space to answer! I had AMAZING teachers growing up and have always appreciated all the hard work they did to make school educational and fun for me. When I realized I wanted a degree in the sciences, I had a choice between making discoveries through research that are beneficial to the human race or raising up the future Albert Einstein's of the world. I chose the future. Children not only are the future, but they are the present. They can make such a difference in the world NOW, and I want to help them realize their potential.

WHERE DID YOU LEARN ALL THE PLANT STUFF?

I am taking a botany class, but that's as far as it goes with any of the scholarly stuff. Plant forums, Google, other plant enthusiasts, IG Plant pages, the Sill, books on vegetable gardens from the 90's, have been the bulk of any plant knowledge I've gained. My experience is still very very very little, so it's just a matter of being able to apply what I've learned to my vegetable garden, houseplants, and propagation station. I will let you in on a secret: I'm book-smart, but sure-as-heck not street smart. So, that's why I have many plant fails. :)
